Dino foot prints butter sugar cookies

I love art and craft activities, but I am not good with the part where you have to store piles of papers and boxes. And to throw them away equals to a heartache for me. I prefer combining art with baking where you get a produce that can be put in the tummies for safe keeping. Like these cute little dino foot print cookies….

This is an easy recipe to work with the kids, even the younger ones. I’ve tried it with my 2.7 year old as well as with my 7 year old twins. It works for my house because we LOVE dinosaurs. We have them in all sizes possible. You could always try a different version like a thumbprint version (no props required. We did this too) or perhaps pony footprint cookies??

You will only need  basic baking ingredients for this recipe. An electric mixer is not needed but it would make things easier if you have one.

The recipe does not require to be chilled but I put them in the freezer for half an hour anyway.

Ingredients:- (makes 24 small size cookies)

  • 1 cup, unsalted butter (at room temperature)
  • 3 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 1/2 tsp vanilla essence
  • 2 tsp baking soda
  • pinch of salt
  • your favourite jam, maple syrup or chocolate sauce (for the filling)

Method:-

  1. In a large bowl, mix together butter, sugar, egg and vanilla.
  2. Add in the baking powder, salt and flour. Mix again.
  3. Knead the dough and form a nice clean circle. Set this in the freezer for 30 minutes. (Although you can skip this step, I find it easier to roll dough when it has hardened a bit).
  4. Turn dough out onto a flat surface. Use flour to help roll to the thickness you like. (I recommend 1/2 inch of thickness).
  5. Pre-heat the oven at 180 degree celsius.
  6. Cut out circles using a cookie cutter or by flipping a bowl. Place them on a baking tray (already lined with a baking sheet).
  7. Use dinosaurs (make sure they have been cleaned) and stomp over the cookies, as you like. I like one large center stomp for a t-rex footprint, while the tiny footprints get as many as 6 prints on each cookie. Let your child play around with this. Remember, you can always roll back and roll out again.
  8. Bake for 8-10 minutes (depending on the thickness of your cookie).
  9. Allow to cool.
  10. Fill in the footprint with some jam, chocolate sauce and/or maple syrup.

Enjoy!
